The Impact Of The Internet Of Things In Data Centers

The Internet of things will generate an exponential increase in data traffic in the network. A study by the Gartner company estimates that 26,000 million devices will be connected in the year 2020 and the immediate question is: are the data centers prepared to absorb such a flow of information without failing in the attempt?

The impact will be very strong. Although it will not be immediate, the term for adapting the data centers is not too great.

The fundamental aspects that will have to be reinforced and many cases taken into account for the first time would focus on the following topics:

1- Security

2- Companies

3- The privacy of the user

4- The data

5- Storage Management

6- Server technologies

7- Data center networks.

Security: This aspect that at present already generates concern about the appearances of news in which privacy violations of different types are reported. The increase in digitization and automation of multiple devices that will be located in different places within cities will pose great challenges for many industries in this area.

Companies: The multitude of devices that can be connected (it is difficult to imagine a real physical figure of this situation) will generate an increase in the complexity of the security systems’ programs. This complexity will result in an increase in the hardware capacity requirement that will have an impact on the response that the processing centers will give to the operations required by the businesses in real time, which will be slowed down and may be affected in the effective operation of the system.

User privacy: As is already the case with devices for personal use and other devices with sensors that use data on the user’s personal behavior (as is the case with the Nest thermostat that Google acquired), the enormous flow of data that will be generated with Private information of the user. If this privacy is not assured, violations may occur. This is particularly a huge challenge to the extent that the information generated by the Internet of Things is the raw material for improving services and the management of the devices themselves.

The data : The impact on the ground of data storage has two types of clients, the individual user of servers and the companies that enter the big data site. As we deepen the applications that “learn” user data and feed efficient algorithms that improve the percentage of sales and affiliations, many significant data will be generated.

Storage management: The Internet of things will increase the need for more and more storage capacity, this is a direct consequence of this exponential growth. But not only the increase will be in the amount of processed data, but the storage must take into account the QUALITY of the same so that the business associates with them efficiently.

Server technologies: The investment that must be made in the server market will be very large. The impact of the Internet of things will cause increased investment in vertical industries and organizations related to these industries where it can be profitable and give significant value.

Data center networks: Currently, data centers use WAN networks as an infrastructure to meet the requirements of user interactions with applications.

The Internet of Things will make substantial changes to the current system by having the transfer of massive amounts of messages from the sensors to the data centers for processing. This will substantially increase the incoming bandwidth requirements in the data centers.
